Review on MiraScreen - Miracast-Compatible πŸ“Ί Android Device with Enhanced Resolution by Michael Tarlue

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Of course it can also be worse. But for the price it's great.

Miracast is sometimes a Finnish standard. But at least you'll have a good time with this particular device if you have a vanilla Android phone or tablet. So let's get that out of the way first - the initial setup for those new to devices like this is disconcerting. MiraScreen needs to install its own application; EZMira for configuration, handling firmware updates and performing tasks required for configuration. So, here is the order to get the hardware working: 1. Provide USB power (from your TV or separately sold power adapter) using the included cable.2. Open Google Play to install EZMira (do not attempt this with Revain end-user hardware).3. Connect to an Android or iOS device using the SSID and password listed at the top of the screen. Yes, you connect to the device via Wi-Fi. (Bluetooth is also an option.) 4. In EZMira, tap the gear icon in the top right corner and go to Settings - you may be prompted to update this device's firmware, much like any ChromeCast or Fire TV5 -Hardware. Give the device the SSID and password of your internet connection - you give the device your WiFi credentials. Once you've done all that, you're good to go! Aside from requiring a wireless access point, this device looks intimidating, but Miracast works great with it. Now for the bad: the device. If you ever keep your USB cable and HDMI adapter separate, you are more likely to lose them. If you don't have the cable that came with the kit, don't use this thing. So keep the separation to a minimum and save the box. You should pack these two items together during shipping so you don't lose any of them. Application. It just doesn't work with Revain Fire for onboarding. When opening it crashes immediately. If you know someone who uses Google Android or Apple iOS and has nothing else β€” not even a computer β€” give them a call to help set them up. Once it's set up to use any internet hotspot, you can open the EZMira app to use it to stream data to the display. But why? You don't need to use their app when there is a better solution like xCast by InShot Inc. Not exactly a shilling for them, it just makes it easier for me to consume content online and it has a pop-up blocker for viewing less safe content. portals. Apart from that, EZMira app tends to work better to view content through YouTube and Vimeo. If you only use these services, great! If you're using safe sources from a clean web, that's great too! However, note that web browser does not prohibit browser hacking techniques and may even allow malware to run through more dangerous parts of the internet. So be careful when using EZMira! What is also sad is the advertising. Both EZMira and my fondness for casting from web, xCast has ads but at least with xCast I can pay to remove the ads. It's not possible to turn off ads with the MiraScreen official app, and that's just sad considering they drain your battery and waste bandwidth. In general, the device itself is great! The software is...er, mediocre. And alternative solutions may not support all device capabilities and provide limited functionality. It's no wonder why people prefer Chromecast and Fire TV to alternatives that use Miracast. Not to mention the lack of built-in WiFi which means you're limited to ONE cable, although it uses a Micro-B USB to connect to the dongle, but the benefit of this is that you can use the WiFi dongle placed anywhere where the TV is can cause problems with WiFi reception. (It should still be separate!)
