When I finally got it working it was far from intuitive. But if you just bought one and are wondering what you need to do, here's how it works: you need to use a small plastic or small flathead screwdriver to insert each wire into the cap, not the metal pins. And when I say put them in the lid I mean ALL down, each one goes past a certain point when you press down and you get feedback that they're firmly in now. When you're done, make sure they're all as close to the lid as possible (otherwise they'll line up with the wrong metal pin). Now close the lid and use pliers or whatever to REALLY tighten it. After removing and adding the cable's built-in connector, my speed went from 1GB to 100, but after grabbing a small rubber band and wrapping it FIRMLY around the cover/case, the speed went back up to 1GB. So definitely not the best product but I have nothing to compare as this is my first time doing it.
