During a power outage, you could turn on the light in the bathroom, put the remote control on the bedside table, and turn on the light before you get up. To turn the light off completely (so it doesn't consume power while waiting for a remote control signal), the instructions say to press the MODE button for 3 seconds. While this is true, you cannot do this if the light is NOT on. To turn off the lamp for storage mode, press the mode button to turn on the light THEN press and hold the mode button for 3 seconds. It turns off and goes into storage mode. At this point, the remote will not turn on the light (this is necessary if you are in memory mode and don't want to waste battery). When you're ready to use the light again, simply press the mode button to wake up the device.
