So I'm sure you've read most of the other reviews on these headphones because who the heck buys anything these days without looking at user opinion. I'll also throw my hat in the ring, not so much because you'll learn a lot from it, but as a "thank you" to Moondrop for creating such an awesome IEM. So I tried them on multiple sources including the Schiit Heresy amp, the FiiO E17K and the LG G7 smartphone (with an extension cord). They are generally not very dependent on the source. In fact, buying a bluetooth wireless cable and converting it to wireless is probably a REALLY good candidate as they are extremely efficient and you get most of what they can from either source. Starfields follows Moondrop's idea of Harman. Curve and I can say that the frequency setting for the bass and mids is almost perfect for me. I like a setting that peaks at the bottom end of the bass somewhere between 30-60Hz and then starts a linear curve down towards the middle, with 100Hz being a solid 3dB or more lower than the 30-60Hz peak. Because? In that sub-bass you get the impact but not all the resonance. Too much resonance usually means the peak of the curve is too close to 100Hz and this can usually mask some of the lower mids or just give the bass or cello too much resonance/roundness. The Starfield's bass tuning is almost perfect. The impact is absolutely felt when the track calls for it, and it delivers VERY fast and responsive bass. You feel the beat, then feel it fade away quickly, creating a much more open sound. The mids are a little warmer, but not too strong. They are open but have enough vocal weight to sound natural. There is a small problem with the upper mids. The problem is that these IEMs peak at 2K where they should be, but they don't drop to 4K like they should. This creates a slight haze in the upper and mid/high frequencies that REALLY flattens out a bit over time. It's still there, but not tiring. With LG I can lower 4K by a few dB and the setup is close to perfect. The highs are very smooth and open up subtly with some spark. The moondrop seems to have gone conservative here, so it's not very punchy or shiny, but actually I'd rather have them conservative here than go a bit the other way and end up with a grainy or slightly sizzling upper. How it all comes together: These elements are, as I said in the title, "totally connected". On busy routes, these devices do not weaken in the slightest. Attack and decay of each note of each instrument can be implemented simultaneously. The soundstage is taller than it is wide, but that consistency translates into some really great instrument separation. It all combines into an extremely entertaining listening experience. I considered them or KBEAR Believe but honestly I can't send them back even though Believe is slightly better in some respects. Bravo, moondrop. For the next Starfield, take away that 4K peak and try making the highs a bit brighter/more expressive while maintaining the coherence and smoothness of the sound. Then you have a $100 item that completely kills a $500 item.
