I make sails for model yachts. Sails had to be numbered on both sides, and the numbers had to be not only permanent but waterproof, and adhered to ripstop nylon, which was notoriously difficult to work with. above for my needs. The ink not only has to stick, but also be waterproof and easy to apply with a stencil. I made two sample figures on nylon and ironed one on silk/synthetic. Instead of ironing it face down, I used a ripstop nylon webbing over the paint. I heated it for five minutes and then immersed the two figures in water for a while. The ironed one stuck to the fabric, and the unironed one could come off. I gave another try by repeating the above procedure, only I changed the iron setting to "Cotton". The nylon shrank forever, leaving an unsightly stain. I lowered the setting to "wool" and was able to keep the nylon flat. At higher temperatures, the color melted somewhat. I stenciled it with some texture and after working the wool the color more or less smoothed out. In all of these tests, I used two coats of paint applied to the fabric. Elsewhere I tried the color on one coat and it seemed to stick to the fabric better than the double coated samples. However, the area that had been painted was not fully opaque. The results aren't perfect, but I think over time I'll be able to figure out how to make the color work. The result is a beautiful opaque shimmering finish and when stenciled onto dark nylon it will not saturate or smudge the other side. Overall I really like this color for the purposes I use it for. I hope to do more nylon projects in the future and I will be using Pebeo colors. and when stenciled on dark nylon, it did not impregnate or stain the other side.
