I have been working in audio and video for 30 years. I recently bought new Bose L1 Model II speakers and needed connection cables. Bought 8 cables, different lengths and ends. After 6 months I noticed a speaker getting quieter and then dying. I checked the wires and 3 out of 8 wires have a short between the RING and BUSHING wires. When I received them new, they passed the test normally. If you have Monoprice cables and cords, I recommend checking them with a meter for shorts between conductors. I cut off the ends of the cable and checked the ends and they were fine. The cable was still shorted without ends. I attached a meter to one end and cut 12 inches off a section at a time until the short was gone so I could find the faulty section. I opened up the damaged section of the cable and it has 2 inner wires, black and white. plus a bare copper shield. THE BLACK WIRE HAS BEEN BROKEN ABOUT 1/4 INCH AND THE COPPER WIRE UNDER THE GROUND IS EXPOSED AND COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE COPPER SHIELD TO CREATE A SHORT IN THE WIRE BETWEEN THE RING AND THE GLAND. Honestly, if it's caused by me just twisting them or stepping on them lightly on stage a few times then it's my fault, but I've never had a single internal wire break in 30 years, it's always been the plugs to the Ends of the cable that are bad or weakened. ***********UPDATE 6-28-14******** I contacted Monoprice and they provided good customer service and replaced the cables. I sent them back the faulty cables and they looked at them to see what could be causing the problem. I will continue to use these types of Monoprice cables due to the quality and 16 AWG, but will test them frequently. ***** **UPDATE 8-9-14********* I was at the show and checked my cables before use and another one shorted! it's getting old Of the 8 cables, 4 expired within a few months. The ends aren't a problem, it's the inner sheath covering the little black wire that breaks and shorts the shield wire on 3 leads, but that short spade lug and ring. I will contact Monoprice again. I never use these cables without testing them and I'm not happy with them as I can't trust them at all. Monoprice continues to offer customers great support for replacing faulty cables. ***** UPDATE 6-16-15 ***** I am still using the cables and have no more problems. Monoprice's support is great and they stand by their products. ******UPDATE 8-29-15***** One of my 9 speaker wires was connected incorrectly, TIP and RING switched places. CHECK ALL CABLES ON RECEIVE. XLR on TRS is. Pin 1 to SOCKET (ground) Pin 2 to TIP (+) Pin 3 to RING (-)
