I've been a very active outdoor/wilderness person my entire adult life (I'm 66 now), including water sports like rafting and sea kayaking. I started wearing Teva sandals and have been happy with them for many years. When they stopped making the style I preferred I tried Chaco and have loved and used them ever since. Outstanding fit, durability and functionality along with unmatched customer service. While I liked that the original Z/1 was easy to put on and take off, I found the toe pinning for rough terrain, boulder jumping, lava hiking (I live on the Big Island of Hawaii. Walk/jump on lava a lot :) Be A LOT safer and more confident as the sole rises almost instantly with every step like a closed shoe, while the Z/1 open toe allows for a little more "clearance" between the toes and the sole as you lift your foot and move forward step; It's not great when you're walking on rough terrain and water with the extra water weight propelling you forward. Once the sandals are broken in and you get used to a little extra movement to position the strap perfectly on the toe, it's really just a matter of a few extra seconds to secure it and move on compared to the open toe. If you ride mostly flat terrain, the open Z/1 is great.
