Review on Accurate Measurement Made Easy: United Scientific MGV003 Galvanometer, DC, +/-50-0-50UA by Robert Howell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This galvanometer is great for my light use.

So far so good. I'm a little different from some of the other reviewers; I don't think it's "cheap", it's just made "cheap". My copy of this galvanometer appears to be decently made from cheap materials. For $13.50 you don't get a top-notch, world-class scientific instrument with a rugged metal body. . But the cost of the cheapest used +-50µA panel mount microammeter alone that I could find costs more than the entire United Scientific MGV003 DC Galvanometer. When I saw this at Revain I stopped making it and just ordered it. I love making my own stuff and I'm good at it, but sometimes an inexpensive alternative to all your ideas and efforts just falls into your lap and you'd be a fool not to take advantage of it. In addition to this device, a set of test leads could be used with banana plugs and spring loaded hooks that could be plugged into the meter's jacks and left there when I need to use it. Simple and it saved me time and money. The counter arrived in what was obviously an irregularly shaped styrofoam container and was in a gasket filled box so my shipping experience was positive. Guitar pickups run through my hands. Many of these pickups don't have markings to identify them, so I use counters to determine pickup wiring; coil start wire, coil end wire, winding direction etc so i know exactly how to make simple and very complex guitar schematics. I saw this galvanometer at Revain and thought it was perfect for working with guitar pickups. The +-50µA range is ideal for guitar pickups. I have no idea what others might use this meter for, but for me and for the decent multi-week use I bought it for, I think it's a great deal. for money. Not to mention the viewing window is big enough for my aging eyes!

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
