Cracked like an eggshell

I built a coal forge from a steel oil drum (new) and used it for the interior. I liked that it was pre-mixed and not too expensive. The consistency is like thick mud and I apply it in a thin layer after wetting the surface (according to the instructions) and lightly sanding. I allowed it to air dry for 48 hours and then lit a "smoldering fire" for 30 minutes (at this point I noticed scattered bubbles although the fire was very weak) and then a "roaring fire" for 30 minutes . another 30 min. I noticed the product cracking and peeling off the wall, and when the surface hit it shattered like an eggshell. Consider taking a tube of Pringles and mashing it up and you'll get the idea. The piece appears to be made of clay and glass (my guess) and becomes very brittle once cured. Interestingly, I smeared a layer of Castable refractory cement, which has the consistency of concrete, onto the bottom of the forge. Came out unscathed. Looks like I'll buy this and redo my project. Big waste of time and money.
