I love the scissor slot. I made my kitchen scissors and then walked around the house looking for a pair of sharpening scissors. For that it works fine. For knives? I think it depends on what you mean by spicy. They will ruin your knives quite a bit, but if you just need a fast blade and don't care about the lifespan of your knives, it will help and keep them sharp. Overall it is very well made and works perfectly. It's a decent value for what it is. Though perhaps you shouldn't grind your glorious handles with it.
