If you want this to run through an 8 hour period, you will need to leave it plugged in. The battery alone doesn't seem to last much more than 6 hours when running everything at the lowest level and no oscillation. The higher the speed and oscillation turned on drains the battery faster.At the lowest setting you can't even hear it running. The higher you turn the fan, the more you can hear it but it's still pretty quiet.The breeze it puts out is great and I'm particularlly found of the fact that it oscillates so I don't get a sinus headache from it constantly blowing on my face.All-in-all, I would recommend this product.
