I've only used them for walking between gentle beaches. They fit comfortably. The sand in it didn't feel abrasive. The material definitely falls into the bad breath category, but the mesh mitigates that. Of course, with a synthetic smell. Arguably the most notable feature is that the drainage holes in the sole are large enough for small pebbles to get stuck. It certainly doesn't protect you from the thorns of the hedgehog if you go into the water. But it works for easy walking over rocks and dirt paths.
