Review on High-Performance True-RMS Digital Multimeter by Fluke 177 by Brian Stepp

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Awesome update for my old Radio Shack VOM!

I'm so glad I finally bought a Fluke test tool. My old Radio Shack gave me very unreliable readings and was very slow. This thing is very fast and I have to assume it is accurate. I use it to work with home electronics - to measure AC and DC current, voltage, continuity and so on. The build quality is excellent. There is a very similar model for use in automobiles, but it does not provide accurate measurements of very small voltages and currents, so it is not suitable for working with electronics. There are also two other models in this range, the 175, which is just less accurate as far as I can tell, and the 179, which also offers a temperature sensor. it's not really where it clicks or stops cleanly. It seems cheap but maybe there's a good reason they made it that way, maybe it'll hold up to heavy use better and be less likely to break. I would also like to have an ON/OFF button instead of having to turn the dial all the way to the left every time you want to turn it off. There's an auto-off feature so you can just leave it on if you want, although it will use up your battery faster. The supplied cables are not of high quality, which is a shame considering the price of the device. The wires just aren't as flexible as they would like as they want to keep their folded shape. So I ordered a set of more expensive replacement wires. They also offer no alligator clips or other wire attachments - just bare metal sleeves. So I had to order them separately again. I still give five stars because I really like it ;-)

Pros
  • Manual and Auto Range with Display Hold and Auto Hold
Cons
  • The list will be long.
