It's good if you know what you're getting.

I noticed a few reviewers who didn't seem to know what they were getting here, and who may not have realized that Lava Lamp has been making non-lava lamps with glitter and such for decades. Either way, it was a fun and quick project for a not-quite-teen. You can just throw everything in the lamp if you like, or you can take a more thorough approach by not using everything that's included. Either way, you give it a few batteries, fill it up with water, and it does its thing. The light transition is quite smooth, so you could probably work for a while without getting too distracted. The shiny pieces reflect the light very well, although the downside is that the plastic beads make a little noise when the lamp is turned on and the water swirls. I wasn't a big fan of the center stakes, but I did notice that they prevent the water from spinning to create a vortex in the center. I think for a child between 6 and 12 this would be a nice gift or something to take with you on a rainy day.
