Review on Parker 99R Heavyweight Butterfly Platinum by Rob Johnson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

So far - I'm very impressed. Doubts and concerns based on reviews were unfounded

I am not currently and have not been compensated for my reviews and I did not receive this product as a condition of my review - I pay my way and write mine Opinion is based on something other than my direct experience. I really like this shaver. Reading some of the reviews I initially had doubts about how this razor would shave and perform - I am overall impressed with this razor both in shape and finish and how well it shaves. I prefer a slightly longer handle and a bit of weight over a razor and this razor does both. I measured a razor that weighs 104 grams / 3.6 ounces, the overall length is 4.25 inches, the length of the handle from the bottom to where it touches the underside of the table (where the blade rests) , is 4 inches. The rod is closed but grooved - although the grooves are very small. Blade clearance is good and some say the blade doesn't protrude far enough and that makes this a soft razor - my direct experience is the opposite, I find it a bit more aggressive than my Edwin Jagger DE89L and was surprised by that. I find this razor needs a little more rinsing than my other razors, but not so much that I can't take a few puffs first. lighter than a two or three piece razor (I have both) and as long as the blade is straight and level the flaps will hold it firmly in place. The grip is safe and strong, not slippery when wet and soapy, the style is very beautiful. The overall fit and finish is very good, not perfect, but nothing terrible or very noticeable unless you look closely. Compared to my experience with the Merkur 39C I would say this Parker is just as good if not a little better at molding and coating. Compared to my Edwin Jagger DE89L it has slightly fewer flaws as the EJ is absolutely perfect in every way. Again, casting and plating issues are mostly where you can't see them and there's nothing that would make me return the razor. I have attached many photos, some of which may or may not be of interest for comparison and real life use. I had to wait three days with growing sideburns for this razor to arrive - NOT recommended - I have before and after photos, no scratches or cuts, no bloodshed. A photo shows the approximate center of gravity of this straight razor in pencil. In the razor line photo for size comparison (left to right) Parker 99R, Merkur 39C, Edwin Jagger DE89L. I thoroughly dampened my hair before shaving with a glycerine-based shaving soap and a badger hair brush using a three-pass technique (through the hair, across the grain, against the grain). I would love a BBS shave but I've had more burn irritation than my other razors - for now I'll chalk it up to my learning curve with this particular razor as I've had to adjust the angle at which I shave. used to - this is not a razor for a close shave in my opinion as I had to use the razor perpendicular to my face with almost no angle even with the razor blade slightly exposed. I would recommend this razor to anyone looking for a long handle and light weight and a very good and close shave.
