Pretty good gear head

Bought this 405 gear head for studio and architectural work. This is a gear head. Gears can lose friction and slip if not properly maintained. Many reviewers of this 405 gear head have reported how brittle the head is. The product was well packaged in a box with a foam cut out that the head fits snugly in. I keep the head in a foam box when not in use and intend to ship it in this box whenever possible to protect the gears from wear. I wouldn't even bother leaning this head against a wall as it could damage the gears. I wouldn't feel comfortable throwing this in my trunk as it could loosen the gears. It's big and feels sturdy, so I understand how some people think they can handle it like it doesn't cost close to $500 and includes gears. but it contains gears, and gears will be destroyed if not cared for. If you treat this gear head well, it will likely last - many years of use. The head has knobs on each axis that allow you to quickly move the head to the angle you want and still bypass the gears. . Proper use of this feature will prevent gear wear and prolong head life. However, if you use this feature haphazardly (not on purpose and being careful in using the mechanism) you are likely to cause significant gear wear. I recommend this gear head.
