***UPDATE*** Downgraded to 1 Star, back to Gain

***UPDATE*** Downgraded to 1 star, we're back to Gain. This formula is no longer sustainable these days: poor cleaning power, musty smell and who knows what that dirt will do inside the car. We haven't used this homemade detergent for a very long time (about 2 months). so I will post an update in the future. As a back story, I bought this laundry kit after reading the article "Make an Annual Income of $30 Laundry Detergent!". ([.]). The recipe also called for OxiClean, which I purchased separately from Revain. I have a new Bosch high performance front loading washing machine. I decided to try this homemade detergent after my old AEG washing machine (20 years old!) was packed up and the mechanic said there was nothing he could do about it - over the years the dirt had built up with the detergent and was messing up the washing machine brought detergent dispenser. Box, drum and filter. My laundry housekeeper was so shocked at how white the white had turned that she asked me if bleach was used which could damage colored items. (No.) I suspect OxiClean will get the job done. So we tried the cleaner on some stubborn stains by mixing some paste and water and leaving the paste on the stain for a couple of hours without rubbing, then washing as usual. The stains came out 99% (100% if you didn't know how to look for it). Maybe this Fels Naptha Laundry Soap will do the job? We started by using just 1 tablespoon of this household detergent in a regular detergent dispenser, which is good for pouring lightly soiled laundry. We increased the dosage to 2 tbsp. l. or even 3 tbsp. l. for dirtier items or items we wanted to lighten up a bit. Is it laundry soda? My housewife has big hands with detergent and she washes everything on the high temperature cotton cycle, so I had to retrain her to be more picky about how much detergent she uses and adjust the cycle temperature to suit the thing being washed. (We have a weekend spot where the water is very hard and gnaws at the washing machine every 5 years - not sure if I should try this detergent in this machine? Logic tells me I should, maybe along with a Calgon tablet or extra washing soda with each wash to counteract the slight suds and build up of mineral deposits associated with hard water We currently use 1/2 cup regular name brand detergent and 1/4 cup washing soda per load on it, especially since ours weekend place has a septic system.) The baking soda in this recipe softens the fabrics a bit, but I use a separate homemade fabric softener that combines 2 pounds of Epsom salts and 30-40 drops of my favorite essential oil (use 2-3 tablespoons in your fabric softener drawer ). With no added fragrance, or with added fragrance instead of homemade fabric softener, laundry smells clean (like water, if that makes sense). I should also say that some of the ingredients have weird names like "Fels Naptha", "Borax", "Soda", etc. This can confuse you as to whether the ingredients are natural or safe (for humans or the environment). ) . ), but as far as I can tell they are perfectly safe. There's some debate online about using borax, but it's like a storm in a teacup.

Pros
  • Absolutely Amazing!
Cons
