Well Protected & Accurate - NCV Function Unreliable

UT133A UNI-T Tester AC DC Voltage Current Multimeter Multimeter 6000 Counts Autoranging NCV Measures Voltage Amps Ohms Capacitance Frequency, Temperature, Diode Continuity Test, Palm Size (ASIN: B099RY58CT) QUICK OVERVIEW ------- βœ… 600V Ceramic Fuses CAT Rated βœ… Accuracy βœ… Quick Read: Continuity, Voltage, Ohms, Amplifier Brand Name UNI-T, but no silicone (PVC ) βœ… REL function βœ… Uses AAA batteries (x2) βœ… Nice layout - intuitive and pleasant to use βœ… 6000 counts ❌ NCV function is weak and unreliable ❌ Plastic feels cheap ❌ Input connectors Cheap Type-C -Split ring vs solid stand ---- ---- Internal protection looks good but I would still avoid mains power. Internal protections also include PTC and MOV, as well as guardrails and blades. It has a decent CAT rating and a fuse voltage of 600V, which is great. (Many cheaper Chinese meters give CAT ratings well in excess of their internal fuse ratings, typically with internal fuses around 250V.) The 133A uses a real controller in a case, not a drip-covered controller. The continuity was instantaneous. It took a few passes, but was still fast, accurate, and reliable. The voltage and current were (as far as I can test) accurate to the mV level. The battery's internal connectors are solid pin connectors that are not soldered to the circuit board. Finally, the input connections are not solid. Pin connectors but the floating split ring types you find on cheaper gauges. It doesn't matter, but solid input messages tell a lot about build quality. UNI-T: Make the NCV function work properly, leave it on or add a battery test function. Whatever you do, never turn on the unreliable NCV feature. I can't find anything wrong with this meter other than the NCV function. The NCV function is unreliable, weak, and does not read some well-insulated power cords (e.g., it does not read some live plug connections at all). CONCLUSION This is a really decent and cheap counter. It uses 600V ceramic fuses, good internal MOV and PTC protection, and is fast and accurate (as far as I can verify) on every measurement I've tested. The plastic used is lighter than some of my other gauges and seems cheaper than some of my other higher rubber content plastic cases. For the price, however, the 133A has a lot going for it as an autoranging meter. However, the NCV function is not one of them.
