🔲 Johnson RAS-1B Johnny Square: Professional Aluminum Rafter Square, 7'', Silver - Top Quality with 1 Square Review

Like most carpenters, I have multiple rafter angles. I like Johnny's square for its marking ability. I have this square in my shop for making rough marking lines when laying out material. It is difficult. I don't like the texture of aluminum, but once it picks up a bit of sawdust it becomes smoother.

I used to have a black 'laser engraved' version of this square, but after about a year of use the square faded and the dimensions became difficult to read. This one doesn't look that cool, but with real engraving it will last a lot longer. I also like the notches for writing and it has a built in bottle opener.

The angle is durable and has a firm grip. But the square had a coating that immediately peeled off when I removed the sticker. I don't expect this to affect usability, but I expect the paint to wear off completely when I hit the square. I expected better. Edit: I didn't get the instructions either.

Find Johnson's black square, it's better than this but still a really good square. I love that it has all the grades on it, some of my friends used the ones they didn't have so I bought two of these to give them as gifts, they seem to like it more. So, lacking the high contrast of the other, it's a little harder to read (but not quite). (I have a black one, I bought this to look different than mine.)

Great for the project we need it for and a lot cheaper than our local stores. My husband would have liked us to have more, but I love having both (and I ended up using it more than he did). The one we received was straightforward although we are far from carpenters. Our projects included: a linen chest (basket rack) and a spice rack. I'll update this if we use it for our future projects!

I bought this square over its Swanson counterpart because of the longer cut throughs. The first Johnson square I bought wasn't flat as shown in the photo. He thought it was an accident and changed it, but the replacement was just as warped. The square was also positioned to include instructions, which were not included with either of my orders. Completely unimpressed with the overall quality of this square, including some obvious roughness in the casting itself.

I already have a few of these but I bought this one because some are plastic and the metal no longer appears square. This Johnson is everything I expected. It is square and regular, all markings are clear, consistent and legible, and the casting and editing are well done. The finish is even, which aids in legibility, and hey, aesthetics can't hurt. The only disappointment is that this is not included in the advertised pocket guide. I've seen these guides before and they cost as much if not more

There is a lot of information out there about using the speed square, more than just using it as a square. The guide is very helpful in learning the many tricks these little guys will be doing. Mine arrived without a manual though so I'll have to call and ask for it or I'll have to look online for features. The missing manual is the only reason for the 4 star rating.
