This is my third Nikon D40. I had D80 and D7000. They all have great features, but the D40 takes great pictures, it's cheaper and it's very light. Paired with a 35mm f1.8 fixed lens, this is the perfect travel camera. After that, you can always zoom or crop the image and be sure of excellent quality in low light conditions, since the 6-megapixel sensor is more sensitive than other cameras with a large number of megapixels. When shooting active children, a high flash sync speed of 1/500 will stop the movement perfectly.
