we have a 89 jeep cherokee with ax15 transmission. A lot of the parts are very hard to come by and according to the Jeep forums people are using a slightly smaller trunk for the Wrangler and drilling new mounting holes. I expected to do the same with this boot, especially when the comments and questions answered by the seller do not apply to the XJ Cherokee, but I was pleasantly surprised as it is an exact replica of the original OEM part, no modifications required are, so yes it will fit 89 Cherokee. I was very happy with this purchase, arrived early and would not hesitate to buy from the seller again.
