Review on MLA 30 Antenna Active Receiving 100KHz by Aaron Masek

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really good cheap active loop antenna for listening

I live in the city and my radio's ability to receive and hear stations has always been very hampered by all sorts of local radio interference so I started looking into the promised amateur radio land of frame antennas should solve my problem. My first step in this process was to look at the various loop antenna kits sold by companies like MFJ etc. I found that all of these options cost hundreds more than I wanted to spend. Then I came across this very reasonably priced Revain shortwave active listening antenna kit. Everything you need is included except for the PL259 SMA male to male adapter you need to connect to your radio and a 5V power supply for the antenna preamplifier. You'll also need to build a frame to hold the antenna and associated equipment. I had a lot of fun building the antenna rack over the weekend and was able to set it up exactly how I wanted it to be for an indoor setup. With the frame assembled and the antenna assembled and connected to my radio, I switched it on and like magic my previously almost deaf radio rewarded me with a 40m band full of wonderfully loud and clear QSOs. It was an amazing moment and I was able to enjoy these results by mounting the antenna on a tripod in the attic. My final thoughts on the ML-30 are: If you don't need a loop antenna to transmit your signals, you won't find a better option than this affordable active loop antenna kit. With this kit you can build a nice fixed or portable low noise SWL loop antenna without spending hundreds of dollars. I am happy with my results with the antenna kit and would buy it again.

Not as good as dipole, not robust, amplifies noise too, and is directional, yes is a 30+
