Review on I-OGEAR 2-Port Cinema 4K DisplayPort KVM Switch with Complete Cable Set (GCS62DP) by Nick Howard

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The mouse emulation works after activation, but not the monitor emulation. 3/5 stars.

Review by: IOGEAR 2-Port Cinema 4K DisplayPort KVM, with Full Cable Set (GCS62DP) Edit: I'm updating this a few months later because I just found out that you can enable emulation, which suddenly this brings my SteelSeries Apex 7 keyboard to life! For some reason my mouse (Logitech G604) doesn't see the G-HUb, but I'll go with one of the two for now. I will update when my mouse works. To switch to emulation, press the scroll key twice, then "m" and then enter. I found this in the KVM switch quick start guide. You can search Google for "GCS62DP Quick Start". There is still the problem of no monitor emulation as discussed in other reviews. ------- My volume keys on my keyboard don't work when I use this KVM switch. I found that this is due to the fact that the KVM switch uses a hub-based structure. Because of this, when switching to or from your computer, you will hear a sound indicating that the USB port has been reconnected or disconnected. The USB hub type switch has its advantages as the computer sees all devices exactly as they are. However, the downside is that it can be unstable and Windows has to re-detect/re-enumerate attached USB devices every time you switch ports. Another type of KVM switch uses emulation technology. This saves the OS from having to re-enumerate your devices every time you switch ports, but it keeps sending general keyboard/mouse information to the computers. That means the operating system doesn't know exactly what devices you have, it just treats them as generic devices. Special features such as volume controls, etc. may not work. Sometimes this can meet your needs, and it's fast and reliable. The other type uses dynamic device mapping or similar technology. This will associate your specific keyboard and mouse with each connected system. It's kind of the best of both worlds because computers see your keyboard and mouse exactly as they are - it doesn't use a generic profile. Computers assume your devices are always connected too, so no re-enumeration/re-detection is required each time you switch ports. The rest of the video works fine.
