Review on Butterick Patterns B4790 Misses Sizes 8-14 by Karla Richter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Did recently.

I made this dress last week. It was very easy. I'm not new to sewing, but I'm new to tailoring. I put a little more effort into using French stitches (not required for the pattern). I got a lot of compliments for that. It looks vintage but not like a suit like many pieces of modern retro clothing. I made the "A" dress - black and white on the cover. Instead of white I used a beautiful blue that goes with the black. I used Kona cotton for the clothing (it's thick enough not to show through). The skirt was wide enough to not need a skirt. However, if you use thin cotton, you will probably need some kind of petticoat. This pattern didn't require any special equipment - I used my basic 1978 Singer to sew it (and I also hand-stitched it a bit as I didn't want stitches showing in places like the hem or bias hem - but it's not required if you don't want to show the sewing). I really want to start my next retro pattern! PS: If you do not know the pattern sizes, they do not match the finished clothing sizes. you buy in the store. I usually wear a size 6 (bust 34 inches), but a size 14 fits this model perfectly. Also, I'm 5'7" - I'd say if you're a little taller, add some length to the skirt.

Pros
  • Made by McCall's Patterns, Copyright 2011
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging

This paper pattern is good for an extra accent for mixed media projects.
