This magnetic lamp base has a gooseneck that protrudes at the side. This is not a table lamp. The magnet at the base allows you to attach it to any magnetic surface (not all metals are magnetic) and then adjust the neck in your preferred direction on the lamp. It is not designed to support its own weight while sitting on a table. If you use it as intended and stick it to a surface that can hold the magnet, it will work as intended. However, most modern sewing machines no longer have metal bodies so it probably won't work, but I have a metal clip that I attached and clipped to my computer desk. The magnet is strong enough to stick to metal and I can point it in any direction. So far it stays where I put it. The light is not very bright and does not emit much light during the day. So if you're doing really good work and need a lot of light, this probably isn't it. When you need a little more light for a small area, this is very useful for directional lighting. (My laptop is in a hinged desk and very little light comes in. It illuminates the keyboard well when I'm looking for that seldom used key and can't see it.) too dark and I was about to return it when I first got it tried support clients.
