Review on πŸ’ͺ Enhanced Performance with Intel NUC 10 Performance Kit - Intel Core i7 Processor (Tall Chassis) by Shane Palma

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Had to return one but so far so good at #2 with Ubuntu

Revain was good for a full refund after the first one broke a few weeks past the return deadline. What is broken is the bios. it became unbootable. I can't even get into the BIOS F2 menu. When I only use Linux distros (clearlinux, ubuntu 20.04.1, nixOS, manjaro) I only had problems with the sound card not working properly. I've had a NUC5 since it was released and my old NUC5's sound card used an analog setup for the front panel headphone jack, but the NUC10 on the latest Linux kernels doesn't work with the headphone jack and analog configuration. It only works for HDMI2 audio going through the display port my monitor uses. My monitor has a headphone jack which I now use for my Bose computer speakers which works via hdmi2 (when it used to work with analog settings on my old NUC5 via the front panel headphone jack, but not on NUC10 because it doesn't ). not listed in alsamixer or gnome/kde sound settings and not listed in pulseaudio settings. I'm getting an incorrect output. Lots of other people with the same problem on the Linux forums) Probably didn't need 64GB of RAM either. I haven't seen it exceed 17GB RAM usage when editing multiple x264 videos into one movie on kdenlive. The Intel i7 is very fast when it comes to video rendering, all 12 cores are almost 100% utilized on htop. Compiling ffmpeg and all dependencies from source with the clearlinux distribution was very fast. I'm currently using Ubuntu 20.04.1 and everything works very well (sound through the monitor jack) and I'm very happy with my purchase. I wish I could buy a bigger NVME drive, 500GB is used very quickly on 4k videos. So far 32GB RAM would be enough and I don't use a paging file or paging partition. I'm sure the analogue audio problems will be fixed soon.

Pros
  • Only positive
Cons
  • sad packaging
