I haven't been in the USB->Serial market for a long time. I am very satisfied with the Keyspan product. I have 4 port models HS-19 and USA=49WG. They worked great until I upgraded to Win7 64 bit. They worked fine on Win7/32. Suddenly I was struck by BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). After finding out that the Keyspan drivers were to blame, I decided to get new drivers. Keyspan was acquired from Tripp Lite. They list the drivers that support Win7/64, but they don't. The date of the driver is 2007 - long before Windows 7. So. time to change something. I heard FTDI has great support. I really wanted a four port device with female jacks. This two port cable device was as close as I could get. So I have a bit more cable clutter than with Keyspan 49, the BSOD is gone. The software is intuitive and integrated into Win7. I have two such devices (total 4 ports). They have embedded serial numbers. So if I plug them into different USB ports, they always get the same COM number. Not all drivers do that. Some report a different COM port when connected to a different USB port. It's much nicer to be able to label each of the ports as COMxx instead of having to go into device manager every time you turn the device on. I'm using 115,200 bps but plan to upgrade to higher speeds when I qualify my embedded device.
