There's a difference between tripods you can find at your local electronics store and tripods from camera shops that sell for over $400. 400 ยฌ for a tripod? Yes. The Dolica GX650204 has professional features, but does not cost โฌ400. Dolik is a 4-piece aluminum tripod. The sections use flip locks for the legs and when you open the latch you have to pull the leg out, it won't slide out on its own. The legs also have non-slip rubber feet with a retractable spike. To open the spikes, simply twist the rubber feet. The legs also have comfortable closed-cell handles and 4-position leg angle adjustment. This makes the tripod very handy and very flexible. Because of this, you can position the camera in different positions (even upside down). The middle column has no rating but can move up and down. It's exceptionally strong in the high position, but I use it in the mid and low positions. All tripods are stronger when the center column is closer to the legs. It is much better to raise the tripod first and then adjust the main stand. The center column is also reversible, allowing the camera to be hung upside down. When the center column is in its normal position, the counterweight hook can be used to add extra stability to the tripod. I sometimes hang my photo bag there. There is also a built in tripod level but I never use it. 2) Unscrew the hook exposing the 3/8 screw. 3) Screw the ball head to the center column. Adjust the center up and down as needed. Tip: Set the tripod at ground level for extremely low-angle shots1) Unscrew the hook. 2) Remove the short part of the stand by pressing the two buttons next to the hook and pulling the short part of the stand down. 3) Remove the ball head. 4) Remove center column. 5) Screw the ball head onto the short part of the column. 6) Insert the ball head into the tripod with the short part of the tripod. 7) stretches the arms to the maximum position (almost horizontal). The ball head is unique. That alone is worth the price of admission. The ball head has a Swiss Arc style quick release plate. It uses a double locking system, handle and safety lock. I know some photographers don't like the security lock, but I think it's great, especially when the camera is tilted down. The ball head rotates 360 degrees and can be tilted up/down from 0 to 90 degrees. There is a recess for the ball neck for a downward tilt of up to 90 degrees. The panning movement is very smooth, so you can take perfect panoramic shots with this ball head. The quick release plate also works with the lens mount. I have also used an RRS clamp and an L plate with this ball head. It works great. The tripod is lightweight and not awkward to carry around or walk through the woods. Additionally, the carrying case feels sturdy enough and will likely last the life of the tripod. In summary, the Dolica GX650B204 is a professional tripod at a great price. I really can't believe how good this is for the price. It has a ton of features, a great ball head, is lightweight, durable and can hold 17 pounds. And if you get 65 inches since it has 4 sections, it works well with small, medium and tall people. Highly recommended.
