My son has both a wide foot and a high instep. He has medium arches, but the high instep makes shoes incredibly difficult to buy for toddlers. We usually buy him XXWide New Balance when they go deep. If you have these concerns too, rest assured that you have found the sandals/water shoes that suit your needs. The shoes and straps are equipped with Velcro, which allows you to attach the shoes anywhere you need to adjust the size. The biggest surprise was being able to get the straps all the way around my son's very thick leg. That never happens! I agree with other reviewers - these sandals are a bit big. However, you can buy them early in the season and use them throughout the season as your child grows. I bought two colors and my son loves wearing them. Don't hesitate - try these sandals for wide/very wide/uncomfortable feet. You will not be disappointed.
