Negative reviews are most likely written by people who do not know how to sew. If you are a craftsman or a seamstress you have no problem. I believe others have "operator error" which is very unfortunate as these negative reviews almost put me off purchasing. However, I do agree that if you are a complete novice at crafting/sewing and are hoping to learn how to use them with the included instructions, you're screwed. the tab on top, then simply line up the press tool under the notched side and press down. The toothed side engages audibly and tangibly. Use your eyes to check which side of the male/female end engages the prongs (this is where most beginners seem to stumble) and you're done. They are clearly small and intended for a few layers of jersey, not for repairing a Carhart jacket. Again, people who sew UNDERSTAND IT, THEY ARE GREAT. I will buy more.
