I have one of those fancy Brother electronic machines so there are no magnetic rails for it. Before purchasing I checked the Brother website to see if it was compatible as my Project Runway device is not listed. This piece fits perfectly in the right panel and is measured from the needle in the center position. Of course my Brother machine always sets the needle to the left by default, but I can add 1/4 inch - no problem! Or I can move the needle to the center. In any case, this guide saves! I finally have straight seams! The only problem is you have to make sure it is perpendicular to the needle before screwing it in, otherwise your stitches will be "in" or "out". I use a rectangular piece of cardboard to line things up before sewing. It won't move after you tighten it!
