I was very skeptical about not using fabric softener, but so many products today say you shouldn't use it. Studying the subject led me to try balls of yarn and I'm impressed. I reduced the amount of fabric softener by more than half, so I didn't use it at all. All items came out virtually static free and just as soft. I have no idea how long they will last but so far they show no wear. I will definitely continue to use them and buy less fabric softener. Update I've now bought my second set of balls after trying another brand that was softer and softer. I came back to these. The old ones still work fine but I've used them on some kitchen rugs and they picked up too many nasty things. Interestingly, I decided to wash the old ones and they came out great! I throw away the soft ones, soft ones, and keep two sets of them.
