From the photo it looked like it was made of metal or some durable material. It is actually made of plastic and not suitable for use on a chair unless the user is a small child. Legs that are not wide enough to fit on the outside of an adult's thighs or on the thighs when seated. It was a gift for my husband who just says everything is fine. He sets it on the floor in front of the couch, his laptop perched on it, hunched over it like a caveman.
