Review on πŸ”’ Cable Matters Dual Bay 2.5 Inch External SSD Enclosure: 10Gbps Aluminum USB C Enclosure with RAID Support - Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 / Thunderbolt 3 Compatible by Jim Diaz

Revainrating 2 out of 5

High power consumption, 5Gbps max speed even on 3.1Gen2 ports

Disappointing. First, it must be powered externally. If you are using two drives, it will not work with two from one USB 3.1 Gen 2 900mA USB-A port. This wouldn't be a huge issue if it worked on a Thunderbolt 3 port without additional power, but it still shuts down when I try to access both drives at the same time unless I'm supplying at least 1.5A external power ( My NUC has a BC1.2 connector, which is enough to power it when paired with a 900mA USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A connector). write down. Also tried other 3.1Gen2 cables, no problem. This is a corps. Also doesn't support cropping, which is disappointing. This means that the controller draws a tremendous amount of power as the drives maximum power is 2.4 watts at full load and about 0.5 watts at idle, making the fact that it won't even idle two drives 1 watt without a shutdown can means the controller draws at least 3.5 watts or probably a lot more considering it's not even powered by TB3 which can deliver a lot more power. That's a lot for something so slow it doesn't even support TRIM. It does *something* outside of 3.0, because when I connect to a 3.0 port it drops to around 550Mbps, which is a far cry from the expected 1Gbps+ I get from a 3.1gen2 device should see. And the drives are more than capable, the Sandisk Ultra 2TB exceeding 550Mbps alone. However, they are easy to set up and install, which is why there are 2 stars instead of 1. If you don't mind that it's barely faster than USB 3.0 or is very power hungry, then I don't think it's that bad. But it does not match the description and this is the first time that many Cable Matters products have not completely satisfied me. I don't really like slow speeds.
