Review on Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 IS STM macro LED lens by Damien Sg ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I³'m satisfied with the product, it³'s well made and the price is also satisfying.

Good lens, I like it. I bought it in the fall of 2022, it came in very handy - I replaced the ancient and rather worn-out tokin 35 / 2.8. I can’t say that it’s a must-have, but for lovers of any small garbage like textures, bugs, figovinok, buds, seeds, etc., of course, a useful thing. In such a FR, the canon did not have macro fixes before, and even on crop, the nearest one is a full-frame 50 / 2,5 compact macro. The lens is well made, plastic, but of high quality, not a slippery Chinese rattle. All switches are at hand, they don’t stagger, they don’t slip, they didn’t get loose during use, nothing peeled off or peeled off. Lightweight, compact, goes well with a trifle like 200d. AF is not instantaneous, as on BBT and other cradles, but STM is, by definition, slower than USM, but noticeably quieter. I don't care, but for video it might be. a plus. Tenacious, accurate, neither on EF-S nor on EF-M does not create problems with an adapter. The lens is very sharp open, the resolution is enough for 90d. I did not notice any special coloration, the color rendition is neutral. The bokeh is also neutral, for a technical subject this is quite a plus. It is not afraid of flare, and the front lens is not that deep, but slightly covered on the sides by a diode ring. The stub cannot be compared with the BBT, but it is quite possible to squeeze out a stop or two, while it is quiet and does not particularly consume the battery. Well, and diodes))) - not a killer feature, but cool. They can help when shooting any macro subject, such as coins. They give the expected light - quite flat, harsh, they can well emphasize the texture of the surface. Diodes in 2 blocks on the sides of the front lens, adjustable, can be turned on separately and with different brightness (there are only 2 levels, but the diodes are not very bright, and this is quite enough). The lens hood is peculiar - a threaded cap screwed into the thread on the lens and, in turn, carrying a thread for 49mm filters. It keeps well until it flies and does not even try.

Pros
  • Compact, lightweight, sharp, excellent detail, tenacious, accurate and quiet AF. Gives an honest 1:1. Not a very trivial angle for macro - before that, the Canon had the widest 50 / 2.5 compact macro. Cool))) - with diodes))) The workmanship is very good.
Cons
  • For me, the lens had two real shortcomings, one of them is stupid, the other is inconvenient. The first one is stupid - the lack of an AF limiter, for some reason, Canon does not consider it necessary on crop glasses. The subject's AF is accurate and tenacious, but in the case of a complex bright background, no, no, and it will try to cling to it. The second - inconvenient - the lack of a normal manual. Those. hand focus - only electronic, it's sometimes really inconvenient, it's easier to turn everything off in figs and focus with a box. Why it was impossible to make a normal manual in macroglass, I do not understand. Well, if there was a slightly larger lens, so what? The rest is quite. And, well, there’s no protection yet, the disadvantage is number 2,5, but it’s only on lyalki for canon, it’s not supposed to be cropped glass at all.
