It was also very difficult for me because I have poor fine motor skills and my eyesight seems to have changed.

I'm a beginner, amateur, have been soldering parts for many years, but never to the extent of recent times. It was also very difficult for me because I have poor fine motor skills and my vision seems to change more often than I would like. This iron helps me get my chores done without all the other problems I would have. No more burning wires. No more cold joints. No more soldering problems. When you're just starting out, people always recommend starting with a soldering iron. I've had several pencil irons before and each had their own problems. Soldering is an essential skill when doing electronic projects as you cannot always get more complex parts with connectors so you end up paying more to solder the element or to solder the connectors to the element yourself. You almost always overpay for the ones that need soldering, and it's easy to get expensive parts on a smaller budget, but to stretch your money, soldering is the way to go. Especially since you can use it to collect parts of broken or old objects. The iron heats up quickly and holds the temperature well. The handle is the right thickness, the cables are long but not too long and I just can't tell you how frustrating it is not being able to solder videos on youtube and seeing how it means nothing . I almost quit working on several different projects because I couldn't get my soldering iron to work the way I needed to have a durable tip and something easy to use. I haven't had a soldering iron tip that lasted nearly as long as this soldering iron and it still works. Not to mention that it maintains a stable temperature, the tip lasts a long time, it's a huge time saver! Not having to sit and wait for the iron to heat up or cool down sufficiently was a royal pain. This is a real confidence booster for those struggling with soldering as it simplifies the process as it holds heat quickly and last but not least I love that the base is always in place and doesn't move. These items are deceptively heavy, but for good reason. You are dealing with items that are heated to high temperatures during soldering, so it's important to get in, get the job done, and leave quickly, otherwise you'll end up with much longer project turnaround times. You just can't get the same performance from $20-$50 hardware. I've tried Weller irons, I've tried Radio Shack irons and now I have this one. I will not change my hardware. You can also purchase spare parts for the iron. Bottom line, price aside, you can't go wrong with this purchase. The price is hard to justify when you're just starting out, but after exploring other options, this one stands out from the rest.

Pros
  • Soldering and soldering equipment
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something
