Zar colors are thicker and general finishes tend to be thinner. Both work well, but the stain is more like a Zar finish in comparison. If you're familiar with Zar stains and want something lighter than dark wood, then this stain is a great option. You can work with it in the same way as with Zar dye. While General Finishing's colored patches work well too, I prefer them so much that I've bought a number of other colors as well.
