This lamp has a fairly good range of brightness. My application for this is for a large shower. I connected it to SmartThings and Juno Connects appears. I leave the on/off in the ON position in the application. At the same time, if he has this light on the wall switch, he can turn it on from the wall, but saves the settings in the application. My experience with smart bulbs is that if you lose power the bulb will reset to default settings, not what you programmed. (At least with Osram Lightify). I only gave it 4 stars because I saw a very slight flickering at certain brightness settings, other than that it's amazing! I immediately ordered a few more, just in a larger size.
