Infrared thermometers that outperform their weight class

I bought this FLIR TG54 spot infrared thermometer to replace my broken Fluke 62 Mini and was really surprised at how much better performing the FLIR TG54 is in terms of performance is. compared to Fluke 62 Mini. First of all, the TG54 is remarkably compact and elegant in design, with the weight distributed right in the middle of the device. No tipping forward or backward when holding and using the device. The included optional front-facing LED light function is very handy for taking heat readings in dimly lit areas, a very nice design indeed. Infrared thermometers in this price range use a plastic Fresnel lens. This gives this little device an absurdly high point-to-distance ratio of 24:1 (1-inch circle at 2 feet from target). This point-to-distance ratio is only available in more expensive models from other manufacturers, which cost many times more than the FLIR TG54. It will never be difficult to get into small measurement ranges again. Note that the spot does not shrink to less than the TG54's actual front aperture of typically 0.75" (i.e. a 0.75" spot if 18" from target is the limit, any proximity is still 0, 75 inches). ) The TG54's laser guide is actually calibrated and aligned parallel to the optical axis of the IR lens. This means that where the laser touches, you can estimate the optical center of the measurement to be about 0.75 inches below the laser spot. Takes the guesswork out of IR temperature measurements. The TG54 also has adjustable emissivity settings, making it easy to measure highly reflective objects (e.g. stainless steel pipes, chrome-plated metal objects, polished drive shafts, etc.). You can print out a small emissivity table and attach it to the TG54 cable tip for a handy guide to setting the emissivity of the material being measured. A small note on the previous device is that there is a significant break. before the device turns on when the measurement trigger is pressed when the device is in cold shutdown mode (i.e. the screen is blank). But if the screen is still on, the measurement mode starts without delay and the measurement updates fast enough that you can quickly scan the area to determine the highest observed temperature. Finally, the TG54 is powered by 3 AAA batteries, which are easy to find. and much longer lasting than the 9V batteries required by most other IR thermometers. Replacing AAA alkaline batteries with typical rechargeable Ni-MH batteries will not affect performance. Overall this is one of the best meters I have purchased to date, I would not hesitate to purchase a FLIR product!

Pros
  • Test, measure and inspect
Cons
  • Quick start guide
