I've been with Canon® for a very, very long time - over 40 years to be exact (hell!). When I decided to give Beautiful Wife (BW) a new camera for Christmas, it was undoubtedly a Canon®. She's the kind of person who makes things easy, aiming and shooting without hesitation, who just wants to snap some good photos of family, office gang, and put the camera in the travel case called handbag for easy carrying is accessible. This little camera fits that bill damn well. It's small, but not too small to be fragile; the viewfinder is a huge plus - believe me, framing in the viewfinder will get you some good photos, not just arm's length shots; The controls are clear and easy to use - the 'Auto' setting is fine for most people until you decide to play around with other modes (which you SHOULD be - be creative!); The photo quality so far is excellent. 12 megapixels, in my humble opinion, suits almost everyone. Unless you're shooting footage to increase the billboard, anything else is just overkill. The face detection setting works pretty well - it locks onto most faces fairly quickly, even in low light. I've only found three minor cons so far: 1. Battery drain is higher than I'd like - the BW will drain a fully charged AA set fairly quickly, but it has to be admitted that there's a lot of hand-to-hand shooting over the Christmas period . 2. The lens is almost flush with the back of the camera and is easily scratched. A screen protector is really important and Canon should include one as it's pretty cheap. 3. The included 128MB card is too small unless you just want to shoot at the lowest resolution, which defeats the purpose of all those pixels. Get a 4GB card - it's cheap too, and you won't run out of room on the card if you have a great photo opportunity. These are quibbles, I know, but that's just my opinion. Overall, I think Canon® has a winner here - nothing spectacular, but a quality camera that's not difficult to use, is compact but doesn't look like a toy, and even takes some sharp, well-lit photos by default. " Auto. After BW (and I, if they allow it) using it for a while, I might come back to this review for an update, but for now I think everything will be fine.
