Lovely item ordered for a 2.5 year old boy who was spending the weekend with his grandparents at the lake. The shoe is fully flexible but the firm sole keeps the rocks from scratching your feet while still allowing the foot to flex and maintain good traction. The bottom, like the sides, is completely sealed so that even small stones or crumbs of sand cannot get into the shoe. This was important as we have a child with a sensory processing disorder who is very picky about how things feel around their hands and feet. They dry quickly. It got very dirty so I rinsed them out and tossed them in the washing machine in the cold on the gentle cycle and they turned out great. You can't beat the price and for me they were there the next day which was important. They were true Ro size. I would say order a size up if in doubt.
