Review on Sangean MMR-88 Emergency Radio - AM/FM/Weather+Alert with Solar, Hand Crank, USB, Flashlight, Siren, Smartphone Charger in Yellow by Tony Lawrence

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great little radio but throw away the battery that came with it

I spent hours reading countless Revain reviews before deciding on this radio. I've had it for about a month and it's working great so far! The handgrip feels solid, but don't expect much from it, as you're actually charging a dead phone for more than a quick call. A fully charged MMR-88 charged my drained iPhone6 to 6% and then stopped charging. At this point, the radio and flashlight are still working - there simply isn't enough power left to continue charging. I tested the built-in solar panel and it charges well, although it takes a while. I have a Suntactics USB solar charger which is much faster and most likely much more reliable than a built in solar panel. The sound is VERY GOOD for this type of radio and I've actually used it while working in the garage but it's not. Boombox so don't expect much volume. Auto-off is a nice feature, if a little annoying when you're actually using it to listen to music for long periods of time. I could also do without other gadgets, except for a possible flashlight, which may come in handy, although I usually carry a few charged flashlights with me. The HUGE advantage of this radio for me was that the battery is replaceable. The cheap battery that comes with this radio will be the source of most if not all of the negative reviews. And the battery is usually the first thing to fail on these radios. If this happens to a radio with an inaccessible internal battery, you're out of luck. The battery is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Throw it aside as a fallback and then find and order a real (there are a lot of fakes out there) 800mAh AW IMR 18350 Li-ion battery. This eliminates charging issues and extends the life of the radio if you only use it in emergencies. The radio itself is charged quite quickly via USB, the cable is included. I use the connector for my iPhone instead of my computer. Overall, this appears to be a quality, well-made radio. Since I couldn't find a single radio for less than $150 from the US, this is definitely a step above the typical cheap China crap.
