Maybe not for me? on Shoes

My first try at Chaco was double straps. I bought them at the store. I loved the style but the toe straps oh my god hurt when tightened! I'm used to toe straps. I've worn a Birkenstock with a toe strap for many years, so that wasn't a problem at all. After reading that chaco straps are often a problem with double pairs, I returned them and opted for a single wide strap. I had high hopes. but my problem is unfortunately the same. I am in a constant struggle with the toe strap. Not only is it annoying, but when that strap is tightened on the big toe, it seriously hurts. When I took a step (and it was one size smaller than the previous sandal). I usually wear a size 10 (Birkenstocks and most other shoes), sometimes a 9.5. Since Chaco doesn't have half sizes, I have to make a decision. Overall the 10 fits well, the arch hits in the right place (I have very high arches), my heel is where it should be and there is a bit of shoe that goes over my toes. At a 9, my heel still fits the sandals fairly well, but it's tight (and looks too small). And my toes hit the very edge. If I stumble, I'd break every toe on my foot. So, I think as much as I would like them to work, maybe Chaco just isn't for me.
