Smells like chemistry!

The shelf itself arrived beautiful and in perfect condition, but it has an overpowering (VERY STRONG) smell. It's so bad he's been locked in a guest room for over two weeks. I still can't use it. I tried putting books on it and they all smelled. The smell is so strong that it swallows a 15x12 room. It is assembled and non-refundable. This is a big disappointment. What is that smell? This is a strong smell of varnish, a mixture of strong plastic and paint. It's terrible.
