Review on BTECH Mini UV 25X2 Mobile Radio by William Bell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good, except for the speaker's TRRS connector and off-mode power consumption.

Note that there is parasitic current draw even when the device is off. That's 17 mA, which drains a car battery in a few days. In my case I have a radio in a UTV with a 12Ah battery. After about 5 or 6 days the battery is so discharged that the device no longer starts. If left longer, the battery will be completely destroyed, down to 0 volts. This is so low that most chargers will not start charging. Then you need to charge the battery (even a flashlight battery will do) until the charger turns on. A dumb charger should be fine, but they're few and far between now. APO, Automatic Power Off, turns off the radio normally, but only in the case of parasitic consumption. The power consumption when the device is switched on is 200 mA. It increases when the signal is actively received or, of course, when transmitting. Another factor is that the display is not adjustable and the light is blinding when driving the UTV at night. "Speaker connection" is not such a thing. It uses a 4-layer connection (tip, ring, ring, sleeve) for audio. It gets the job done, but if you only want to hook up a mono speaker, you're out of luck. You need a TRRS connector with the correct terminals. The vast majority of TRRS to stereo adapters will not work. You will most likely have to solder/assemble it yourself. One adapter that worked was a TRRS to dual RCA plug adapter. You can find the speaker audio on one of the RCA connectors, white in my case. I didn't want to cut the wires as they are usually tinsel, not solderable and very thin. I soldered directly onto the RCA connector since I didn't have an RCA connector. The rest of the radio works perfectly. I put a switch on the DC cord next to the radio to *actually* turn it off when I parked the unit at the end of a trip. If you have a regular car and drive it every day or two, you won't have any problems. However, if you park it for a few days, it may not start without a bridging charge. So here it is, Baofeng. You made three mistakes with this radio: high stray current when the radio is off, improper connection of the TRRS connector, and inability to dim the display. On the other hand, CHIRP programs this radio well, with the usual CHIRP quirks and quirks. But this is another story.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
