Review on Stemedu Playback Electronic Greeting Recordable by Keith Desjarlais

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy to use (for electronics experimenters) and works very well!

Well there were a couple of times I needed something like this but I didn't have it on hand. I used a similar device many years ago to play the "torgo haunted theme" (MSTies will understand) from a speaker hidden in a hat at a costume contest. For the past few years I've wanted to do something different with a recording device like this, but I never got around to it and now I've forgotten what the idea was. Now that I have 5 of these next time I need one it will be there! The price is right, but creating a working "system" requires some other small details. As an electronics experimenter from a distant past, I had most of these parts in my junk drawers. Ideally, you'll need an inexpensive electret condenser microphone, a few simple single-pole tactile switches, a power source (such as batteries and a battery box), and a small speaker, which is what you would find in a transistor radio. But the requirements are not critical. For example, instead of switches, you can simply use pairs of wires that you touch to simulate switch contacts for recording and playback of your recordings. Board instructions are not included. You need to look at the images in the Revain display to understand how to connect, record, and play back components. But if you play around with things like this, it's pretty easy to understand and implement! The input supply voltage is specified as 3 to 4.5 VDC and is easily sourced from AA or AAA batteries but requires a suitable battery holder. I used a 5V DC USB power supply. Electricity that will last a LONG time due to low power consumption. In the photo and video I've attached, you can see I made do with what I had on hand. The speaker is from a small guitar amp, and the switches are vintage calculator pushbutton switches that have been in the box for decades! I did a quick test recording through the TV speakers during a show my wife was watching. I think this little board works very well. The clarity and volume of the sound is sufficient for normal purposes. There is no volume control. So if you want to change something about it, you have to provide the means to do it yourself. Have fun - if you need something like this, get it!
