Review on 🌑️ Extech RHT30 USB Humidity/Temperature Datalogger: Track and Record Environmental Conditions with Accuracy by William Dean

The hardware works like a charm; Software a bit cumbersome

Bought to control temperature and humidity in my lab. I was looking for something compact, wireless in the sense that it's not wired but NOT RF capable and has a fairly large memory. It comes with a mount that can be attached and locked to something secure. The software was downloaded from the company's website and installed on my Win7 computers with no problems. All configuration has to be done through software, which is inconvenient in some respects. You synchronize the recorder's clock with your computer's clock and set the recorder's sample rate and alarm conditions. There is a battery monitor. We'll see how it works over time. It doesn't give you any information other than a picture of a battery disassembled into parts. There's no estimated time to full discharge, which would be a nice feature to let you know when the battery needs replacing. The key part is how you enable logging. You have to go through the configuration every time you want to start logging. With the temp/humidity loggers I've worked with in the past, you set up the device once and then boot/clear/restart the log with separate commands. With this device you download data with a separate function and then have to go to the configuration screen to clear the recording and start again. Not that big of a problem, just different. The uploaded data is saved in two files, one in the logger's native format and one in Excel format. Formatting an Excel file takes some practice to graph the data, but it's definitely doable. The device is a little expensive but it does what I want it to do so I'm happy with the purchase.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
