Review on Shure 55SH II Unidyne Microphone by Ryan Morrow

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Classic old world charm, modern crisp sound.

Everyone loves old school style mics. I bought this for a good friend who is a bit of a crooner. The beauty of this mic is that it has an old school appeal but with a very modern sound. It is very similar to the Shure Beta 58a and the reason for the similarity is that it uses the same capsule which sounds clearer and more modern than the older SM58 and has a hotter output. So yes, you can buy this classic mic and get a modern sound with a nice tight supercardioid pickup pattern. I wondered if the cage-like basket would mess up the capsule's polar diagram and if internal reflections might be an issue, but none of these drawbacks seem to materialize in use. What's not to love?
