Canon went too far to sell its ink

This may be the fourth Canon printer we own. All but this one delivered acceptable performance. The printer is used for routine printing in a home environment. No photo printing, just the regular documents you print out at home. Possibly a few leaves a day. However, the printer requires a printhead cleaning about once a week and a deep cleaning about once a month. We use non-Canon ink cartridges, brands that have worked without problems in other Canon printers, brands that get good reviews on Revain. I believe the problem stems from Canon's efforts to lock customers into using only Canon ink. As with other Canon printers, the ink cartridges have a chip. However, Canon has improved this model again. Canon warns users that removing and reinserting a cartridge into the printer will damage the printer, even if the cartridge is full. An obvious step to prevent ink cartridges from being refilled. Based on our experience, it seems Canon has gone further by chipping their cartridges to recognize non-Canon ink cartridges. Using non-Canon ink will result in the printer printing too lightly, streaking, or not printing at all. I realize that the non-Canon ink may just be inferior. But why does this printer have problems when other Canon printers haven't? I understand the concept of selling a device at a very attractive price and getting the real profit from selling consumables, but Canon went too far this time. This printer will go to a local charity and will be replaced with an Epson EcoTank (ET) model. I have no affiliation with Epson, have never owned an Epson but they get decent reviews and the ET models are the super tankers of printers. ET models have self-contained, refillable reservoirs, no ink cartridges. Epson claims that the ET printers have shipped with enough ink for the last two years. Based on the reviews I've read, that's realistic. A full set of ink refills costs about $40. The ET models sell for almost double the Canon MB2320, but the ink savings will easily make up the difference. I'd rather pay more upfront than get scammed by Canon.

Pros
  • Absolutely Stunning!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
