It's a pair of tongs, yes, and I use it upside down in sections. But due to the size of the barrel and the length of my hair, I get the desired effect that would have taken me three hours with a super expensive wand. I can still use whatever hair products I love to protect and hold the curls, but when that's the case I'm done in about 15 minutes. I love this product. I can stab and let go, and people think I've spent hours preparing. Excellent day and night flexibility. And I have thick hair. So it never holds curls but it does hold that crimp/curl situation and when it flattens out it still looks like a beach. ❤️
